The time that Jason Momoa wanted to meet little ol’ me
The Art Piece
Shortly before my very first event as a featured artist at a convention (2014 Motor City Comic Con), I started working on a portrait of Jason Momoa as his character Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones. I knew he was going to be attending this event as a guest, so I did my best to work quickly in the hopes that I could create a piece of art that people might be interested in buying and that I would be proud of. I decided to take it much further than just a simple portrait and instead make it a piece that included symbolism that represented the character’s love for his Khaleesi, Daenerys Targaryen, as well as his ultimate fate and legacy. The title of the piece refers to the terms of endearment that the two characters give to each other.
The convention began and on the day that Jason Momoa was set to make a guest appearance, I made a few sales of this portrait piece. Not long after, I had one of my previous customers return with a signed copy of the piece I had sold to them, and they excitedly reported to me that not only did he love the artwork, but that he want to meet the artist! I was slightly in shock and star-struck. I would imagine it’s not often that the famous person is the one looking to meet the lowly first-timer in artist alley.
Jason Momoa’s Appreciation
So, later in the day when the traffic had died down a little, I brought one of my prints over to his booth and explained that I was the artist. He was extremely friendly and we talked for a bit, then he signed my print, took a photo with me (ironically beneath the sign that said “no photos please”), and then asked me to bring him back more copies - some for him to sign that I could then sell for more money and some he could give out at his booth! He also wanted one to give to his son because he really likes dragons.
It was super nice of him to be so supportive of some artist he's never met before and be so down to earth about it.
Thank you again, Jason Momoa!
